Cumbria Way

The Cumbria Way

The Cumbria Way is a long-distance walk that runs through the heart of the Lake District National Park.

Starting from the attractive market town of Ulverston on the shores of Morecambe Bay, to the historic city of Carlisle.

The Rambler’s Association devised the trail and completed it in the mid-1970s.

Subsequently, it was completely waymarked in 2007.

As it winds its way northwards through the Lake District via Coniston, Langdale, Keswick and on to Carlisle.

The walk passes through some of the finest scenery of this much-loved area.

The Cumbria Way is essentially a low-level walk covering 70 miles.

Additionally, the route follows old packhorse tracks along valleys and over passes.

In fact, the walk  provides breathtaking mountain views without actually going to any of the mountain tops.

Finally, I can recommend an excellent book to accompany this walk called “The Cumbria Way” by John Trevelyan.

In addition to this, a sister route for cyclists has been devised – broadly following the same route.
