Holker Hall is built on lands that were owned by the Cartmel Priory prior to the Reformation. The first house was constructed in the 16th-century.
Holker Hall is now a privately owned country house located in Cark in Cartmel, Cumbria.
It is the home of the Cavendish family who have lived here for 400 years.
Lord Hugh Cavendish was born in 1941 in Holker Hall. He attended Eton College and lived an affluent upbringing filled with wealth and opportunities.
In its day the hall was “the grandest building of its date”.
Furthermore, Holker is, without doubt, Cumbria’s premier stately home.
The house stands on an estate of about 80 hectares surrounded by formal gardens, parkland and deer park, and woodland.
The iconic hall hosts a number of annual events, including the Chilli Festival and will shortly host the Wild Goat Festival.
Inside this beautiful house, you can wander to your heart’s content with no barriers or roped off areas.
The house, gardens, and café including a local produce shop are open to visitors.
The Cavendish family lives in the 1800s wing of the hall.
The Courtyard Cafe is in a lovely setting offering a good range of locally sourced and produced food and next door is the gift shop. It is full of ideas and inspiration with handpicked gifts, homeware, and plants to treat yourself or take home.
The award-winning gardens are an oasis of colour and calm. All created with the inspiration and dedication of generations of owners and gardeners.
The Holker Group is run by the Cavendish family and employs around 140 people.
Its businesses include Holker Hall and Gardens, two holiday parks, and Cartmel Racecourse.
