The Lake District UK's No 1 Destination

Ashness Bridge

Ashness Bridge is a small Grade II-listed packhorse bridge and is probably the most photographed bridge in the Lake District.

Although the bridge and the view are loved by many, it doesn’t have an exciting history or chequered past. It is simply a stunningly beautiful spot where you can pause and enjoy what is around you.

You may notice the sides of the bridge are low. It was built this way to allow clearance for the packhorses as they carried large packs strapped to their sides.

Much of this area is open-access land and is criss-crossed by a number of footpaths.

If you are feeling fit you can combine the bridge and Surprise View further up the road.

Ashness Bridge

This extremely picturesque viewpoint looks out over Derwent Water with spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and the River Derwent.

You can also see how the two lakes were connected many thousands of years ago, and occasionally still are when the area is flooded.

The views continue into the distance, along the glaciated valley, to the Solway Firth and, on clear days, views of the Scottish hills.

As you are admiring the views, look out for Lingholm, poking up through the trees at the top end of Derwent Water.

This is the place where Beatrix Potter found inspiration for Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkin.

From Surprise View is is a relatively easy walk up the valley and up to Wantendlath where you will find a secluded tarn to admire and find a place to grab a bite to eat at the cafe.

The village is owned by the National Trust and there is an NT shop here as well as other facilities.
